City of VENICE - BERTOLDO Quarry

• Cava Bertoldo quarry belongs to the municipality of Venezia and is located along the Venezia Trieste railroad. Main scope of work consisted in safety work on a clay quarry contaminated primarily by gypsum phosphate, a byproduct of a sulphuric acid production nearby. This caused also radioactive and chemical contamination on the water table exceeding allowable standards.

Designed to be a public Park in the future, quarry's contaminants have been permanently confined by means of vertical bentonitic/cement curtains and plastic membranes connected to the clay foundation layer. A 50 cm. watertight Capping has been placed using clay –cement admixtures. Additional sand soil layers and textile drains have been installed to a total thickness of 2 m. to ensure additional protection from radiations. Finally Piezometric well control points have been installed.
